Plein air Painting: Urban or Landscape with Debra Ward Professional Artist and Instructor
LOCATION: meet at north end of Kinsmen Park (parking lot)
Learn how to paint outdoors and create your own community of artists! Maybe you are curious about adding buildings to your paintings or maybe want to capture the gardens in your neighborhood.
It is refreshing to paint outdoor and this is the workshop to help you get started. You will be out painting skies and fields, or your back alley before you know it.
Join painter Debra Ward for this one day workshop. Start the day watching a demonstration painting unfold.
The focus will be on a strong dark mass to create a value pattern. From there the brightest light will be added as a keynote to guide you. Then fill in the mid-tones so you will have a ‘shadow map’ of your picture. A few details may be added at the very end. The simpler the shapes, the better the result. Learn how to simplify the shapes of buildings and place them into the landscape.
Workshop participants typically use acrylic or oil paints. If you are working in another medium that is fine; much of what will be taught is universal: color, value, composition, edges, form, etc.
If using oils, please no turpentine. And you must have a tight- fitting lid for any medium.
Please bring your own supplies. Travel easels and paints (oil and acrylic) will be available – to ensure you do not have to buy a light easel or new colours to have Debra’s preferred palette; but seeing as this workshop is out of studio we will not have all supplies available on site.
Supply list will be issued to those who register.
In the event of a rain-out we will postpone the workshop until June 26. If it is raining the 26th we will simply have an indoor workshop – using a landscape image projected onto the wall or use other images.
Painters could bring their own photo references or borrow one of Debra’s.
